When we say management of contaminated areas (GAC) we are talking about the whole process that involves identifying the area, surroundings, soil, air and water of the place. This process is divided into a few steps, each of which has its standard procedures that follow the rules of the responsible environmental agency. All these steps are required by the competent environmental agency.
The stages of managing contaminated areas are:
- Preliminary assessment
- Confirmatory investigation
- Detailed Investigation
- Human health risk assessment
- Closing monitoring
The preliminary assessment aims to identify facts, evidence, indications or uncertainties that lead to suspect the existence of contamination in the compartments of the environment.
Those legally responsible for the identified and prioritized areas must be required by the managing environmental agency to carry out the next stage of Contaminated Area Management (GAC), that is, the Preliminary Assessment stage.
Executing the Preliminary Assessment stage produces an initial diagnosis of the area based on a survey of existing information and a survey of field information.
After compiling and interpreting the information obtained during the preliminary assessment, the Preliminary Assessment Report will be prepared.
Soon after, if evidence of contamination is proven, the legal and technical responsible are required to proceed to the next stage: Confirmatory investigation.
